Prof. R. Critoph

He is Head of Sustainable Energy Engineering and Design, Energy Theme Leader, was previously Head of the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Division (27 academic staff) and ran the EPSRC ‘Thermal Energy Conversion, Conservation and Storage’ network linking the UK, China and Japan.

He has worked on heat pump and refrigeration systems since 1982, published 89 papers (h-index of 18), 2 book chapters, 5 patents and managed contracts worth £4M for industry, government and the EU. Industrial clients have included British Gas, Searle, and Unilever.

He was Guest Editor of the recent special issue of the International Journal of Refrigeration on Refrigeration and Heat Pumping with Sorption Processes.

The School of Engineering is recognised as a centre of excellence in the UK and was ranked in the top 20% of General Engineering departments in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

The school has very good facilities for manufacturing and testing refrigeration components or systems, environmental test chambers, solar simulator, etc. It has equally good electrical, electronics, power electronics and IT support, essential for reliable instrumentation, control systems and modelling.

 

Warwick Business School

Prof. D. Elmes

He joined the Warwick Business School in April 2008 as Academic Director for the Warwick Global Energy MBA after more than 20 years in the energy & management consulting industries. He was appointed Head of the School’s Global Energy research group in January 2012.

After graduating in Natural Sciences from Christ’s College, Cambridge, David joined BP, working in the UK then the US. He then joined Gemini Consulting in 1995 and, after various mergers, was Vice President with the UK Energy, Utilities & Chemicals team of CapGemini. In 2004 he joined Schlumberger as Vice President & Director in the team who created the firm’s management consulting arm, Schlumberger Business Consulting.

He has focused on the development and implementation of changes in the business model of companies that transform performance and access new markets.

This includes the changes in business model required to sustain growth, business models required for new market entry, assessing market options for bundled home services in the UK (including energy) and the role that technology strategy plays in organisational growth and performance.

 

Prof. D. Read

He joined the Warwick Business School in February 2011 as Professor of Behavioural Science. Previously he held a number of positions in prestigious universities, including Reader in Operations Research at London School of Economics, Professor of Behavioural Economics at Durham Business School and Visiting Professor Behavioural Economics at Yale School of Management. He has also held positions at Leeds University Business School, INSEAD, and Rotterdam Business School.

Professor Read has published widely in leading journals including Psychological Review, Management Science, Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, Risk Analysis, Journal of Experimental Psychology, Applied and Journal of Experimental Psychology & Learning Memory and Cognition. He is a former associate editor of Management Science, and former editor of Journal of Economic Psychology.

His main research areas include inter-temporal choice and risky choice, and he has recently started a large-scale study into the planning fallacy - the tendency for projects to take longer and cost more than expected.

Professor Read has consulted for the UK government and regulatory bodies on aspects of behavioural economics related to consumer welfare and environmental marketing. Recently he was a co-author of a report for DEFRA on the implications of behavioural economics for the market for energy using products.

Applications for Cryogenic Cooling

On the 12th October STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) will be opening it's doors to the SIRACH Network. RAL is home to many of the UK’s most advanced research facilities and supports work in a range of areas including space science and astronomy, particle physics, nanotechnology and developing new materials.

Our SIRACH event will focus on applications for cryogenic cooling and delegates will hear presentations on leading edge technologies.
